For my theme this year, I chose to do contrasting colors. I noticed I liked glazing my projects with different colors, and how the different colors emphasized the different parts of the project, for example the inside and outside of a bowl. The different colors contrasted each other, to emphasize different parts of the project.
Throughout the year I made a bunch of different projects. I made three different bowls of different sizes and colors, one vase, four mugs, one plate, and a few other projects all having to do with contrasting colors. For the bowls, I glazed them with one color on the inside and a different color on the outside. I glazed the mugs with a dark color on the inside and running down the outside on top of another color.
I threw all of my projects on the wheel. This year I used different kinds of clay including vashon white, red clay, seamix and one porcelain. I learned how the different clays feel while throwing, how they shrink different amounts, and how glaze looks differently on different clays. While throwing, I mostly used a small sponge. I liked using it to pull up so it is easy to pull up evenly and smoothly.
For the glaze on my projects I used different colors to contrast different parts of the project. For example, on a bowl I used rutile tan on the outside and tomato red on the inside. The different colors juxtapose the inside from the outside of the bowl. For my turtle bowl, I mixed rutile tan with shadow green for the inside and shadow green on the inside. The different colors greens emphasized the difference of the shell and the belly of the turtle.
Once I chose my theme, I started to think about where I was going to put each color while I was throwing it instead of after. This led to me thinking about the different parts of the project and the shape of the project as a whole and as different parts. I began to think about the different surfaces, the inside and the outside. The color of the glaze of a project really effects how the shape of the project appears.
